The pan fill model accomodates those C4 transmissions without a case fill option. The pan fill pan is most often found on F100 trucks and Broncos. The pan-fill pan has a drilled and tapped hole with a fitting that works with the dipstick tube. The C4 transmission is a popular performance transmission for racing. - Again, everything was hunky-dory. We now have a case-fill transmission called a 'C4' and a pan-fill one called a 'C5.' No confusion, no problem. Fast forward to 1979. This was the final year of manufacture for this C5 transmission, but the C4 continued for another four years until 1983.
- Pan fill C4's receive transmission fluid through the dip stick tube which goes into the right side of the transmission pan. Thus the term 'pan fill'. During the same time period, Ford also used a case fill style of the C4 (transmission fluid goes into the transmission through the dip stick tube going into the case of the transmission).
- The CASE FILL and PAN FILL c4 is the same trans, just different. So the bellhousing doesn't have much to do with it necessarily. There is also case to bell bolting and pump to bell bolting for both case fill and pan fill.
